On Primorsky Boulevard in Odessa, near the Duke's monument, students and researchers have completed archaeological excavations initiated by the South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after Ushinsky.
As reported on Facebook by the rector Andriy Krasnozhon, the expedition has proven to be extremely successful.
Among the discoveries are archaeological materials of Genoese origin dating back to the 14th century. These findings indicate that there was initially a cultural layer of Italian Ginestra and later an Ottoman fortress in this area. Remains of the fortifications from that time were found near the funicular.
Details of the findings are promised to be shared later.
Ivan Liptuga, the director of the Department of Culture of the Odessa City Council, emphasized the significance of this event for the city and the history of Ukraine.
He also mentioned that there are plans to install a glass dome over the excavation to preserve the discovered remains of the fortress.
