Exploring Ancient Necropolis in Odesa Region

In the Odesa region, near the village of Orlivka, an archaeological expedition organized by K.D. Ushynskyi University has commenced. The research is being conducted at the necropolis known as «Stone Mountain», located along the banks of the Lower Danube.

The university's rector, Andrii Krasnozhon, stated that this area has served as a crucial crossing point between the Great Eurasian Steppe and the Balkans for the past five thousand years. Various peoples, including Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Romans, Goths, Huns, and Bulgarians, as well as the armies of the Persian king Darius and the Macedonian general Zopyrion, have traversed this land.

“From an archaeological perspective, this site can be likened to a tectonic rift between the civilizational plates of East and West. It is an area of extraordinary concentration of treasures and archaeological layers from all times and peoples…”, – emphasized the rector.

Professor Ihor Bruyako, a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute, has led the archaeological excavations for over 20 years.

This season marks the first during the war when history students and volunteers from other faculties have rejoined the research efforts.

“I wish you sensational discoveries! Delve into the mysteries and breathe freedom!”, – noted Krasnozhon.
