Environmental Challenges in Odesa and Mykolaiv Regions

The consequences of military actions and technological incidents pose significant risks to the environment in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, as reported by the press service of the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District.
Experts emphasize that the region is experiencing soil contamination with toxic substances and combustion products, adversely affecting land fertility and environmental safety.
At the same time, the negative impact on water resources is evident — the Black Sea, estuaries, and river systems are suffering from infrastructure destruction and repeated strikes on port facilities.
“Air quality is deteriorating due to explosions, fires, and the operation of industrial facilities during shelling. Additionally, natural areas — coastal zones and steppe ecosystems are losing biodiversity and natural balance,” the report states. Eco inspectors continue to conduct instrumental measurements, document pollution cases, and respond promptly to citizens' concerns. “Monitoring is ongoing, and data is entered into the 'EcoThreat' system, which allows for an accurate assessment of ecological risks.
Collaboration with scientific institutions is also ongoing to identify effective methods for cleaning soil and water resources,” eco-inspectors highlight.
