In Odesa, a new mural has appeared on the Mother-in-Law Bridge, serving as a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russian aggression. The artist presented Cossack Mamay not in a traditional sense, but as a modern Ukrainian hero.
According to the National Resistance Center, the creator of this work is Mykhailo Skop, who crafted a powerful visual representation of Ukrainian struggle. In the hands of the Cossack is a trident, alongside shadows of Cossacks who once stormed Khadjibey. Beneath the hero's feet lies a Moscow leviathan, defeated by the symbols of Odesa and Ukraine.
This mural is part of the "Resistance Murals" series. It is the third such mural in the city that speaks of Ukrainian resistance on the streets.
"The new mural in Odesa — Cossack Mamay has returned to inspire resistance," — states the official Facebook page of the National Resistance Center.
The project organizers emphasize the symbolic significance of this work: "This is not just a folkloric hero. This is the image of a modern Ukrainian warrior." The artist merged historical memory with the contemporary context of the struggle for independence.
Details of the composition draw special attention. The shadows of Cossacks storming Khadjibey remind us of Odesa's heroic past when the city was captured by Ukrainian warriors. The image of the Moscow leviathan beneath the Cossack symbolizes victory over the enemy.
"Memory is our weapon," — the project authors note, highlighting the importance of historical consciousness in contemporary struggle.
The "Resistance Murals" series aims not only to beautify urban walls but also to uplift the fighting spirit of Odesites and remind them of Ukraine's heroic history. Each mural becomes part of the cultural front in the war against Russian aggression.
"Odesa speaks the language of the streets — and each of these images strikes the enemy," — conclude the project organizers.
