A man caused damages estimated at over 650,000 UAH to the state. He faces up to three years of restriction of liberty.
This morning, during a joint patrol near the village of Kalahlia, officers from the Odessa District Police Department No. 2, along with border guards, discovered a 24-year-old resident of the Ovidiopol community who was extracting illegal fishing gear and catch from the water. The man did not possess any permits for fishing activities.
The investigative team that arrived at the scene seized from the offender a fishing suit, two gill nets totaling 200 meters in length, and 287 fish weighing a total of 180 kilograms, including: herring, carp, bream, crucian carp, perch, taranka, flatfish, and asp. All items were transferred for safekeeping to a specialized facility during the pre-trial investigation.
According to preliminary estimates by specialists, the illegal actions of the fisherman caused damages to the state amounting to over 650,000 UAH.
Based on this fact, investigators from the territorial police department have entered information into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations under the signs of part 1 of article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, regarding illegal fishing activities that have caused significant harm. A forensic ecological examination has been appointed to determine the exact amount of damage caused to the state. After conducting necessary investigative actions and obtaining the expert conclusion, a decision will be made regarding the notification of suspicion to the individual. He faces up to three years of restriction of liberty.
The investigation is ongoing under the procedural guidance of the Chornomorsk District Prosecutor's Office.
Police urge citizens to be responsible, comply with current legislation, and protect nature.
We remind you that starting from April, the annual spring-summer spawning ban on the catch of aquatic biological resources has begun in the water bodies of Odessa. In the Dniester estuary with floodplains, it will be in effect until July 31 (the ban does not apply to specialized herring fishing).
