The investigators have officially charged the suspects. The offenders are in custody. They face a lengthy prison sentence.
At the end of January, during curfew hours, which are not penalized under current legislation, criminals doused a 68-year-old resident's «BMW» with flammable liquids and set it on fire in the courtyard of a residential building on Yevhen Chykalenko Street. Bystanders noticed the fire and called firefighters, who extinguished it. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the front of the vehicle was damaged. According to the expert assessment, the damage inflicted on the owner amounted to over 735 thousand hryvnias.
Officers from Police Department No. 4 of Odesa District Police Department No. 1, in collaboration with employees of the Criminal Analysis Department of the National Police in Odesa region, quickly identified the offenders. They turned out to be unemployed 20-year-old friends renting an apartment in the city’s Kyiv district.
The police found that one of the young men received an offer via messenger from an unknown person, whose materials have been separated into a separate criminal case, to set a car on fire in Odesa for monetary reward. To execute the crime, he involved his friend. Following the instructions of the so-called curator, the accomplices selected and agreed on the car with him and received money on a card to buy everything needed to carry out the task. The result of their «work» was filmed and sent to the client. However, they never received their fee.
The police apprehended the offenders in accordance with procedural norms.
«During the pre-trial investigation, which was conducted under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa, we gathered sufficient evidence of the illegal actions of the young men and charged them with intentional damage to someone else's property by arson, committed by a group of individuals in conspiracy. According to the sanctions of part 2 of article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the offenders face up to 10 years of imprisonment. They are currently in custody. The pre-trial investigation has been completed, and the indictment has been sent to court», - reported Oleg Zoshchuk, head of the investigative unit of the territorial police department.
