New Inclusive Train Car by Ukrzaliznytsia

Ukrzaliznytsia has introduced a new train car that can be reserved, and in the absence of special requests, compartments will be used for regular services.

The modernization of the first experimental passenger car, entirely designed for wheelchair users, has been completed.

This car is compartmentalized, but instead of 4 sleeping berths, there are 6 in each compartment. The space is organized so that two wheelchair passengers and two attendants can travel comfortably. If there is no need for inclusive seating during the trip, the car can accommodate 6 individuals.

Key features of the car include:

  • Electric lift with a capacity of up to 300 kg;
  • Wider doors and corridors for free movement;
  • Navigation in Braille and contrasting signage;
  • Spacious restroom with shower, SOS button, crutch holder, changing table, and child seat;
  • Occupancy indicator for the restroom;
  • Individual power outlets with USB and Type-C;
  • Seats with adjustable backrest angles;
  • Separate lighting controls in the compartment and at each seat;
  • Video surveillance in specific areas of the car.

The car was produced at the wagon depot in Bakhmach. All work took three months and was carried out by the company's specialists.

Before the modernization began, the Ukrzaliznytsia team consulted with organizations specializing in assistance for people with disabilities, allowing them to consider actual user needs and create a car that meets modern inclusivity standards.

This car is part of Ukrzaliznytsia's systematic efforts to implement barrier-free solutions in the railway transport sector. The company consistently works to ensure accessibility of both rolling stock and station infrastructure for people with reduced mobility. Solutions are being implemented to improve access to platforms, navigation, escort services, and online bookings.

Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that this car is just the first step in a broader program aimed at creating a barrier-free environment in the railway sector. The company plans to expand similar solutions to make journeys comfortable and accessible for all categories of passengers.
