New Opportunities for Older Citizens in the Military

image

On July 29, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a new law enabling citizens aged 60 and above to enlist for military service under contract.

The document states that during the period of martial law, with the written consent of the unit commander, citizens deemed fit by the military medical commission may be accepted into service. These service members can take non-combat roles, serving as privates, sergeants, or officers. Contracts for individuals aged 60 and over are set for one year with the possibility of extension. For officers in this age group, approval from the General Staff of the Armed Forces is mandatory. This category of contract soldiers will undergo a two-month probationary period. If they fail to meet the standards, the contract will be terminated.

Should the martial law be lifted or canceled, all such contracts will automatically become void.
