In Ukraine, November 21 is celebrated as the Day of Dignity and Freedom, established by a presidential decree on November 13, 2014. This day honors two pivotal events in modern Ukrainian history: the Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity in 2013.
The Day of Dignity and Freedom has replaced the Freedom Day, which was celebrated from 2005 to 2011. The previous president abolished this holiday in December 2011, merging it with the Day of Unity.
On November 21, 2013, massive protests began in Independence Square in Kyiv in response to the government's decision to suspend the course towards European integration. Initially, a few hundred people protested, but by November 24, that number had surged to over one hundred thousand.
This time, the fight for dignity cost the lives of more than one hundred patriots, with over 2,000 injured. In 2014, Russia's armed aggression began, leading to the occupation of Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
This year, Ukraine marks the Day of Dignity and Freedom amid a full-scale invasion by Russia that has been ongoing since February 24, 2022. The country is once again fighting for freedom and independence.
In Kyiv and other cities, a series of events are planned under the slogan “November 21... and every day, without weekends.” The program includes exhibitions, forums, conferences, and film screenings.
In the capital, a joint interfaith prayer for Ukraine and its heroes is planned, along with laying flowers at the Alley of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and the “Bell of Remembrance” event. The blessing of the monument “Angels in White Coats” will also take place.
