Meta unveils new security features in WhatsApp designed to safeguard journalists and public figures against potential cyber threats.
The key enhancement is called "Enhanced Privacy Settings", which provides users with additional security options alongside end-to-end encryption. Here’s what it includes:
- Account Security: two-step verification is enabled. Security notifications are active and inaccessible to outsiders. End-to-end encrypted backups are recommended for users.
- Messaging and Media: attachments and media files from unknown senders will be automatically blocked. Link previews are disabled.
- Calls: calls from unknown numbers are concealed. Your IP address will also be hidden during calls.
- Profile and Status: details regarding your online presence, profile picture, and status updates will be restricted from being viewed by others, apart from your contacts.
- Groups: only known contacts or a pre-defined list of people can add you to groups.
The new security features in WhatsApp are available for activation within the app for iOS, Android, and Mac, and can be individually enabled in the "Privacy" section of settings.
