According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, nearly 12,000 fires in ecosystems were recorded in the early months of 2025. The primary causes of these fires are careless handling of fire: a discarded cigarette butt, a match, or intentional burning of dry grass. Consequently, approximately 10,000 hectares of Ukrainian land have been scorched, causing significant harm to nature and ecosystems.
Despite constant warnings, many people continue to burn grass, garbage, and dry vegetation on their plots, yards, and fields. This issue is particularly acute in spring and autumn when Ukrainians commonly burn dry leaves, grass, and branches, mistakenly believing that it enhances crop yields. In reality, this is a myth, and the damage from such burning is immense.
What are the dangers of burning dry vegetation?
-
Loss of soil fertility
The fire destroys the microflora that plays a crucial role in important biological processes. The fertile layer of soil takes about 5β6 years to recover after such burning. -
Harmful effects on health
During the combustion of dry vegetation, toxic substances are released into the air, posing a threat to human respiratory organs. The smoke from burnt leaves contains carcinogens that can lead to serious illnesses. -
No benefit to the land
Burning grass does not warm the soil, does not enrich it with beneficial substances, and does not promote the growth of new grass. -
Risk of large-scale fires
A small ignition can quickly escalate into an uncontrolled fire, destroying homes, forests, and agricultural lands, causing devastation and additional strain on rescuers.
Instead of burning dry leaves and grass, itβs better to choose safe disposal methods:
- removing plant waste to special landfills organized by local services;
- composting β a great way to obtain natural organic fertilizer for gardens and farms.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine urges all citizens to treat the environment responsibly and avoid creating risks for themselves and others. Remember: burning dry vegetation brings no benefits, only harm to nature, health, and property!
