In Odessa, the final stage of the collector reconstruction in Arcadia, one of the key infrastructure projects that began in 2017, is underway.
This work encompasses both above-ground and underwater components of the drainage system, aimed at ensuring the stable operation of drainage networks that have been in an emergency state for many years.
On the section from the ground exit to the seashore, cleaning of the old drainage pipe is ongoing, which, according to experts, was in critical condition — part of the foundation had already rotted, and water was flowing directly on the ground. According to the project, a new polyethylene pipe resistant to aggressive environments is inserted into the old 2-meter diameter pipe. The space between them is filled with concrete, which strengthens the structure and extends its service life.
The next stage will involve laying the pipe in the marine section. The work will be carried out in phases: divers will cut technological hatches, clean the inner surface, and install the new pipe. A floating barge with a crane will be used for this.
“The work in Arcadia is the final active phase of a multi-year project aimed at ensuring quality drainage and comfort for the residents and guests of Odessa,” said Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.
After the completion of the work, the area will be cleared of construction debris and metal. Experts predict that the updated beach will be able to welcome visitors in comfortable conditions as early as next year.
Coastal Reinforcement and Future Promenade
Simultaneously, coastal reinforcement is ongoing along the section of the coast from Arcadia along Novoberehova Street to building 90/51 — between traverses No. 2 and No. 3. These works aim to protect the shore from the destructive action of waves, which, due to the specifics of the shoreline, create a sinking effect — during storms, water washes away the soil, and the shore literally “goes” into the sea.
Currently, the dismantling of old anti-landslide elements is taking place, along with piling, preparation for concreting, and the production of reinforced concrete products — slabs, blocks B1, stepped and wave-deflecting structures. These elements not only serve a technical function of reinforcement but also form the basis for landscaping the area.
“In the future, a modern promenade will be equipped here with a pedestrian zone, ramps, a bicycle path, as well as a restored part of the 'Health Route' that will return to the updated section in an improved form,” Gennady Trukhanov noted.
