Every year, during the autumn and spring seasons, instances of burning dry plant material are reported in the city.
The Odessa city council reiterates: burning dry leaves and grass is prohibited in Ukraine and may lead to administrative fines, and in some cases, even criminal liability. This practice harms the environment, public health, and poses a danger to life.
It is also forbidden to dispose of leaves and branches in trash containers or leave them nearby.
There is a misconception that this practice can enhance crop yields. In reality, this is not true.
Firstly, it destroys microorganisms that are essential for biological processes. Soil fertility may take 5-6 years to recover under these conditions.
Secondly, harmful substances that can affect respiratory health are released during burning.
Thirdly, burning grass does NOT warm the soil, does NOT enrich it with ash, and does NOT promote the growth of new plants.
Additionally, a small fire can escalate into a large-scale blaze, causing destruction and increasing the workload for emergency services.
It is better to compost leaves, as this is not only a civilized approach to organic waste management but also a cost-effective way to produce excellent fertilizer.
