The police uncovered a resident of Podilskyi district involved in the illegal acquisition of a vehicle. The thief committed the act because he did not want to walk home. The suspect has been charged and a preventive measure has been chosen. He faces imprisonment with property confiscation.
Law enforcement reported that the incident occurred in one of the settlements of the Zelenohirsk community. A local resident informed the police that an unknown person had stolen his VAZ car from the yard at night.
"The vehicle was discovered by the police on the outskirts of the settlement, near the crime scene, and during the initial investigative actions on the same day, the offender was promptly identified and arrested at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old resident of the Baltska community, previously convicted of property crimes," the statement reads.
The offender explained to the police that seeing a car in an unprotected yard, he decided to drive it home. The car was unlocked, and he started the engine by connecting ignition wires. However, he did not get far, as the vehicle broke down, so he abandoned it on the outskirts of the village and fled the scene.
"We detained the suspect in accordance with the law. We have gathered enough evidence and informed him of the charges for committing a criminal offense under Part 2 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This pertains to illegal acquisition of a vehicle, committed repeatedly. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years with or without property confiscation. Upon our request, the court selected a preventive measure in the form of detention. We also appointed a commodity examination to establish the value of the car and the amount of damages suffered by the victim," said Oleg Sytnyk, head of Police Department No. 1 of Podilskyi RUP.
