The perpetrator approached the victim under the pretense of conversation and at the right moment snatched valuable jewelry from him. He has a long criminal record, having spent over 11 years in prison. He now faces up to 10 years of imprisonment.
A 33-year-old man reported to the police that he had been robbed in the city center. Law enforcement quickly responded to the call and apprehended the offender, who was hiding in the entrance of a residential building.
According to Irina Yablonska, the deputy head of the investigative department, the criminal noticed a gold chain with a cross on the neck of an unfamiliar citizen, approached him, and deliberately started a conversation, then suddenly snatched the jewelry and ran away.
The total value of the stolen items amounted to about 35 thousand hryvnias, but the offender was stopped from using them. He refused to provide explanations regarding his illegal actions.
The suspect had previous convictions for theft, robbery, and attempted murder, having served over 11 years behind bars.
“We have informed him of the suspicion of openly stealing someone else's property, i.e., robbery, committed again under martial law. According to Article 186 part 4 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, this crime is punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment. The suspect is currently in a temporary detention facility, and we are deciding on the preventive measure of detention,” added police captain Irina Yablonska.
The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the Black Sea District Prosecutor's Office.
