At City Clinical Hospital No. 10 in Odessa, a groundbreaking surgery was performed that saved the life of a stroke patient.
According to Alexander Skrypka, head of the interventional radiology department, this was one of the most challenging cases - an injury to the brainstem. The basilar artery was nearly completely blocked by an atherosclerotic plaque. Such strokes are among the most dangerous, and without urgent intervention, the chances of survival are minimal.
The specialists decided to operate and perform angioplasty on the artery. Hospital No. 10 has experience with this treatment method in cardiology for coronary artery atherosclerosis, but its application to cerebral blood vessels is an innovative technology in Ukraine.
The surgery lasted about 60 minutes. The narrowed artery was widened using a special balloon, followed by a drug-coated balloon.
The patient still faces rehabilitation for complete recovery. However, she is already able to talk, move, and has every chance of returning to a normal life.
City Clinical Hospital No. 10 has its own angiograph, and the city government continually equips the hospital with the latest technology. This enables medical staff to implement modern global techniques, save lives, and maintain patient health.
