In Odessa, the vaccination program for children against the human papillomavirus (HPV) is actively being implemented with funds from the city budget. This vaccination effectively prevents serious illnesses, including cancer, in adulthood.

The vaccination against HPV is most effective for individuals aged 9 to 14, prior to the onset of sexual activity. During a vaccination conference, Levon Nikogosyan, the director of the Health Department of the Odessa City Council, reported that since October 2023, 1590 children have been vaccinated, with 858 having completed the full course of two doses. By the end of the year, an additional 1500 HPV vaccinations are planned.

Currently, Odessa is the only city in Ukraine where both girls and boys are vaccinated against HPV free of charge.

“Vaccination is one of humanity's brilliant inventions that has saved many lives. I urge all parents to take their children's health seriously and ensure timely vaccinations,” emphasized Levon Nikogosyan.

A professional vaccination school was held on November 6, 2024, supported by the Health Department and the Association of Family Medicine of the Odessa region. The event included pediatricians, family doctors, therapists, immunologists, allergists, infectious disease specialists, and other professionals.

Doctors stressed the importance of timely planned vaccinations for children to prevent infectious disease outbreaks and maintain a favorable epidemiological situation in Odessa and Ukraine as a whole.

Additional recommended vaccinations not included in the National Vaccination Calendar, such as those against pneumococcal infections, were also discussed. Special attention was given to effective communication between medical staff and parents and addressing common questions regarding vaccination.
