In Odesa, doctors performed an extraordinary surgery on an eight-month-old boy. A special electrode was implanted in the child's heart to help the muscle contract properly.
The details of the surgery and the child's condition are reported by "Suspilne". The boy, named Hlib, is currently in the intensive care unit.
The parents learned about the infant's heart defect after his birth, and this period was quite challenging for them due to significant risks.
Additional specialists were involved for the combined surgery. With the help of ultrasound equipment, pediatric cardiac surgeons were able to locate a very thin subclavian vein.
"We implanted the electrode not in the muscle but directly into the heart's conduction system. According to our findings, this is the first case we found in the literature for such young children. We targeted the conduction system of the heart, this left bundle, and achieved excellent electrophysiological and mechanical outcomes. First the electric current, and then the heart contraction we provided," explained surgeon Yuriy Karpenko.
This surgery is unique because it is the first such surgical intervention performed on a child under one year of age in the world. This sparked international interest, leading to invitations for Ukrainian doctors to the University of Chicago to publish this case in leading medical journals.
"Like everyone else, we utilize artificial intelligence, Google, and other resources. This can all be verified. That is why this surgery created such a resonance. We are very pleased that this was done in our country, in Ukraine, in Odesa, at our hospital," the doctor explained.
The baby is currently in intensive care. The implanted pacemaker will support the boy's heart function for 15 years.
