Fortunately, during their time underground, nothing serious happened to the children. They were safely returned to their families. Yesterday, around 5 PM, a resident of Odessa reported her 13-year-old son missing to the emergency line 102. Police immediately initiated a search, interviewing the boy's relatives and friends and discovered that he planned to explore the catacombs with a friend.
By involving canine units, emergency services, and spelunkers, authorities found the children less than an hour later, 300 meters from the catacomb exit. In addition to the two boys, who were reported missing, there were also two younger acquaintances with them.
The boys explained that they wanted to explore the Odessa catacombs but did not inform their parents. Communication was lost as soon as they descended into the underground world.
Juvenile prevention officers held a discussion with the teens and their parents about preventing similar situations in the future. None of them had previously come to the police's attention.
Regarding the adults, authorities issued protocols for neglecting parental responsibilities. The sanctions include warnings or fines of up to 1700 hryvnias. Administrative materials will be sent to court.
«We were very worried about the children, as it is easy to get lost in the catacombs. Considering the temperature is much lower than on the surface, it poses significant dangers. Fortunately, the teens were found quickly, and they returned home unharmed,» said Alina Khimich, the senior inspector of juvenile prevention at the Odessa District Police Department No. 1.
Police urge both children and adults not to descend into catacombs without the guidance of experienced spelunkers. They are extensive, can easily disorient, lack communication, and are very cold, creating lethal risks.
