Ukrzaliznytsia has commented on recent changes to its train formation plans, which were implemented to optimize freight flow on the Pomichna-Podilsk and Pomichna-Chornomorska routes, as well as to enhance the operation of traction substations and ensure efficient use of locomotives to avoid overworking locomotive crews.
This information was provided by the company in response to a request from EĞŸ.
The statement indicates that there are restrictions on the intervals for train passage and power supply on the mentioned routes.
Additionally, the decision took into account the current and potential freight traffic towards Ukraine's largest port – MTP "Pivdennyi".
The company also emphasized that freight tariffs for rail transport within Ukraine should be indexed annually. However, this norm has not been consistently followed in previous years, and the pace of tariff indexing for freight transport has lagged behind the rising prices of key resources consumed by the railway.
"In particular, since the last tariff review, electricity prices have risen by 166%, diesel by 110%, spare parts for diesel locomotives by 217%, spare parts for electric locomotives by 22%, bearings by 37%, solid-rolled wheels by 20%, and so on," the company's statement reads.
As a result, these factors, as noted in the response, have deprived Ukrzaliznytsia of the ability to effectively carry out infrastructure and rolling stock repairs and to index wages for railway workers.
"In contrast, private companies can carry out tariff indexing by reducing logistics costs, which allows them to meet their social obligations, including paying a 13th salary," Ukrzaliznytsia advised.
Reminder:
Recently, PJSC "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih" expressed its "concern" regarding the changes made by Ukrzaliznytsia to the train formation plan that led to an increase in tariff distance.
"We are extremely concerned about the changes implemented by Ukrzaliznytsia from April 5, 2025, which have increased the tariff distance for trains carrying our products by 257 km, consequently raising the cost price of the products as well."
"We consider this change in routes by the state monopoly Ukrzaliznytsia to be artificial and unfounded," the company stated.
The adjustment of the tariff distance to the Odesa maritime port is regarded by ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih as "artificial and selective" and "do not rule out signs of targeted economic pressure on ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih."
