Transition to Winter Time in Ukraine: New Regulations

image

In the night of Sunday, October 26, Ukrainians switched to winter time by setting their clocks back one hour at 4:00 AM. This resulted in a 24-hour day being extended by an hour.

The practice of transitioning to summer and winter time began in Great Britain in 1908 to save electricity. For decades, in Ukraine, the clock change occurs on the last Sundays of October and March. This process is regulated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine's resolution from May 13, 1996, No. 509.

On July 16, 2024, the Parliament passed bill No. 4201, abolishing the switch to winter time. According to the new regulations, a unified Kyiv time of UTC+2 will be established. Thus, in 2024, Ukrainians will set their clocks back for the last time, and starting in 2025, the transition to summer time will not be implemented. However, the law has not yet been signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
