In Ukraine, October 27 is celebrated as Ukrainian Language and Writing Day.
This day was established on November 6, 1997, when President Leonid Kuchma supported the initiative of public organizations and signed decree № 1241/97.
Until 2023, the holiday was observed on November 9, the day honoring the memory of the venerable Nestor the Chronicler. However, following the transition to a new church calendar, the date was moved to October 27.
Every year, various events are held in Ukraine to promote the Ukrainian language. A traditional event is the National Unity Dictation, authored this year by writer Yevheniya Kuznetsova, with actress Natalia Sumska reading the text.
Last year, over half a million people participated in the dictation, with around 10,000 submissions received from more than 30 countries.
