The National Bank of Ukraine has launched a new commemorative coin in the "Eastern Calendar" series titled "Year of the Horse" with a denomination of 5 hryvnias. The coin is already in circulation and will be available for sale starting November 4. This was reported by the bank's press service on November 3.
According to Chinese astrology, the year 2026 will be the Year of the Fire (Red) Horse.
"Thus, our coin "Year of the Horse" is dedicated to this symbol. The horse is the seventh sign of the eastern calendar, representing activity, zest for life, independence, endurance, and determination. It also embodies dynamism, decisiveness, and the pursuit of freedom," the statement said.
Coin Design
The reverse of the coin features a stylized symbol of the eastern calendar for 2026 — a horse against the backdrop of a horseshoe, symbolizing luck and protection. Below this image are three dots — a symbol of the continuation of struggle.
"The horse's mane conveys the dynamics of movement "with the wind" or "against the wind" — this is a metaphor for inner strength, resistance, and the pursuit of freedom," explained the National Bank.
On the obverse of the coin, 12 symbols of the eastern calendar are depicted around the edge, while in the center is a stylized clock with a hand pointing to the zodiac sign leading in 2026.
This design was created by artist Marina Kuts and sculptor Volodymyr Atamanchuk.
