Communicating with Veterans: Insights and Guidance

image

Are you unsure how to engage with individuals who have combat experience?

Find valuable tips that will help you interact respectfully and understandingly through an interactive simulator designed for the educational series «People with War Experience: Dignity and Interaction».

For example:

* In the middle of the night, you wake up to your partner, who just returned from the front, suddenly pushing you. He is disoriented and still in a combat mindset. What should you do next?

* At work, a veteran colleague starts making jokes about dark subjects like death, injuries, and war. How should you respond?

The simulator will present several possible actions along with explanations from an expert, helping you understand how your behavior might affect your interaction with someone who has experienced war.

Remember, each person's experience is unique and requires an individualized approach. If you're unsure how to act, be sincere, tolerant, and don't hesitate to ask questions.

For more information on how to interact appropriately with veterans, check out the educational series «People with War Experience: Dignity and Interaction», available on the Diia.Education platform and the «How Are You?» YouTube channel.

This educational series was created under the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Transformation as part of the communication campaign «How Are You?» of the nationwide mental health program initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska. The project continues the section of «Barrier-Free Handbook» focused on proper communication and is implemented with the support of the Coordination Center for Mental Health of the Cabinet of Ministers, the NGO «Barrier-Free», and Visa, a participant in the «Business Without Barriers» community.
