Cultural Initiative in Odesa: A New Interpretation of a Classic

A significant cultural event took place in Odesa — during a Christmas concert, the legendary «Shchedryk» was showcased, performed by local choirs. The audience also witnessed the premiere of a music video for this piece, filmed under wartime conditions.

«Shchedryk» is a world-renowned composition by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, recognized as a symbol of Ukrainian musical heritage. This time, it was presented as a collaborative effort by Odesa's choirs, musicians, and artists.

The project idea originated from Odesa's music schools, where choir groups united. Participants included the Odesa State College of Arts named after K.F. Dankevych, musicians, and creators who aimed to reinterpret this globally known piece while highlighting the vibrant contemporary culture of Odesa.

The music video was filmed during challenging moments — in brief pauses between air raid alerts, symbolizing the resilience of the city and its cultural community.

The Deputy Head of the Odesa City Military Administration, Olha Lozova, emphasized the project's significance for the city:

«These initiatives are not just about art. They represent our identity, showcasing Odesa's ability to resonate and create even in the toughest times. «Shchedryk» performed by Odesans is the voice of the city heard worldwide.»

Project coordinator Olena Pavlova stated that the main goal was to preserve sincerity and genuine emotion:

«We wanted Odesa to sound new and modern. In every note — Odesa, in every voice — our unity and belief in culture as a unifying force.»

The project exemplifies how culture continues to thrive, evolve, and unite communities even during wartime, shaping the contemporary image of Odesa on the cultural map of Ukraine and the world.
