A joint mission from UNESCO and ICOMOS is currently in Odesa to evaluate the status of cultural heritage in the context of war.
«We are pleased to visit your city and gather information for future recommendations to preserve the world cultural heritage», said Ms. Berta de Sancristobal, the mission leader.
This monitoring mission was originally scheduled for 2023 but was postponed due to increased military threats.
The primary goal is to assess the condition of the world heritage site and the implementation of prior recommendations.
Among these recommendations is the preservation of the site in its original state and examining factors affecting its integrity and protection.
International experts noted that some issues are caused by the war, while others stem from emotions and political factors.
«UNESCO focuses on history and culture, and it is important for us to maintain the integrity of our heritage», emphasized Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov.
The mission will last several days and include numerous meetings. During the nearly three years of war, Odesa has experienced about 10 major attacks, resulting in damage to approximately 170 cultural heritage sites.
