A 20-year-old resident of the Podilskyi district has received a court verdict for cruel treatment of a neighbor's dog, resulting in the animal's death.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odessa region. An agreement on reconciliation was reached between the offender and the victim. The young man will serve a punishment in the form of restricted freedom with a probation period.

In February of this year, a woman from a village in the Ananyiv community reported to the police that an unknown individual killed her yard dog and disposed of its body in an abandoned well on the street.

From the crime scene, police seized two bloody and broken kitchen knives, which, along with the dog's body, were sent for forensic examination. According to the expert's conclusion, the dog's death was due to blood loss caused by cutting and stabbing wounds to the head and neck.

Police established that a 20-year-old local resident was involved in the crime. The young man explained that the woman's dog was allegedly causing damage to his parents' property. He decided not to report this to the police and instead entered the unguarded property of the woman, inflicting injuries on the dog that was tied up with the two knives he brought.

Investigators charged him under Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for cruel treatment of animals, which resulted in the animal's death.

During the pre-trial investigation, the accused admitted his guilt and entered into a reconciliation agreement with the dog's owner, which, along with the indictment, was sent to court by law enforcement.

The court found the defendant guilty, approved the reconciliation agreement, and imposed a punishment of one year of restricted freedom with a one-year probation period. During this probation, the convict must periodically appear for registration with the authorized probation authority and inform the authority of any changes in residence, work, or study, and agree to travel outside of Ukraine.
