The Odessa City Council has initiated a new project called «Odessa Manages Healthy Weight».

The goal of this initiative is to reduce obesity rates among adults and children, prevent related health issues, and improve the quality and longevity of life for Odessa residents.

«Weight management is a strategic priority recognized in many countries around the world. Less than half of Ukrainians maintain a healthy weight, with a significant portion struggling with obesity. Awareness of healthy eating and lifestyle choices is essential for health and longevity,» emphasized Levon Nikoghosyan, director of the city's health department.

As part of the project, training will be provided to over 350 family doctors and pediatricians, along with primary care nurses, focusing on obesity treatment and prevention.

Leading experts from the Department of Family Medicine at the Odessa National Medical University and the Family Medicine Association of Odessa region will conduct the training sessions.

The curriculum will cover various topics including how to counsel both adult patients and children, proper nutrition, child feeding practices, and monitoring eating habits, physical activity, and sleep patterns. Screening for obesity and related diseases will also be introduced.

The first session of the project commenced on March 4, 2025, at the Primary Healthcare Center No. 4. The initial group comprises 15 doctors and 15 nurses who will participate in a two-day professional workshop on obesity and motivational interviewing with patients.

«Obesity is not merely an aesthetic concern; it is a chronic disease that can be insidious. Many individuals may feel fine for years, but gradually they can develop high blood pressure, fat accumulation in the liver, which may lead to fatty liver disease and potentially liver cancer, along with increased blood sugar levels that can result in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. People with obesity can suffer from diabetes for years without realizing it. Furthermore, complications such as cardiovascular issues, heart attacks, and strokes may arise,» stressed Valentina Velichko, director of the Children's Consultative and Diagnostic Center.

Healthcare professionals offer simple advice to help improve health:

1. When thirsty, drink plain water. Avoid sugary drinks between meals.

2. Aim to include at least half a kilogram of vegetables and fruits in your daily diet; they are rich in water and fiber, providing lasting satiety.

3. Dedicate one hour each day to physical activity, such as brisk walking, squats, or exercise routines.
