On September 1, the new school year commenced for 3.5 million children in Ukraine.

Of these, nearly 2.3 million will receive traditional education. The number of students studying remotely has decreased by 103,000, as reported by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

Serhiy Babak, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, noted that 10% of Ukrainian schoolchildren are learning remotely or through alternative methods, as they are abroad (about 303,000) or in temporarily occupied territories (over 35,000 students).

He mentioned that this year about 12,000 schools will operate in Ukraine. Of these, over 8,000 will teach children in-person, 2.5 thousand – in a mixed format, and another 1.5 thousand – remotely.

Deputy Minister of Education and Science Nadiya Kuzmychova previously stated that the majority of children learning remotely are students from schools in Kharkiv, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Currently, there are 56 relocated schools operating in Ukraine, as reported by Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi.

Yulia Svyrydenko also mentioned that by the end of 2026, Ukraine plans to open 203 new shelters in schools.

Nadiya Kuzmychova earlier reported that 221 underground schools are being built in Ukraine. From September 1, 33 of them will open, and by the end of the year, construction of another 156 facilities is expected to be completed, allowing more than 100,000 children to return to classrooms.
