As of September 14, 2025, the reserves of natural gas in Ukraine's underground storage facilities have exceeded last year's values for the first time this year, reaching 12.055 billion cubic meters.
This is reported by the specialized publication ExPro.
Currently, Ukrainian underground storage facilities hold 12.055 billion cubic meters of natural gas, which is 0.05% or nearly 5 million cubic meters more than on the same date in 2024 when the storage contained 12.05 billion cubic meters.
It is expected that in the coming days, this gap will widen further.
The publication reminds us that at the beginning of this year's injection season (April 17), there were nearly 5.41 billion cubic meters of natural gas in Ukrainian underground storage, which is 35% or 2.95 billion cubic meters less than on April 17, 2024. Throughout the injection season, Ukraine managed to fully close this gap, primarily due to increased imports.
Since the beginning of the injection season, nearly 6.68 billion cubic meters of gas have been injected into Ukrainian underground storage, which is 1.67 times more than in 2024. Moreover, more gas has been injected into the storage throughout 2025 than was stored at the end of the heating season.
Specifically, in September 2025, Ukraine is injecting an average of 53.9 million cubic meters of natural gas into storage daily, which is 2.3 times more than in September 2024. About half of the injected volumes consist of imported resources.
The average daily import volume is 23.6 million cubic meters in September, mostly supplied by the state-owned company Naftogaz of Ukraine.
It is worth noting that the filling of underground gas storage in the EU reached 80% (86 billion cubic meters) on September 13-14. This is the lowest level of storage filling in the EU since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, yet this year's reserves are higher than in 2021.
